The EU Biomass Action Plan

New impetus for domestic bioenergy

The Biomass Action Plan was designed to propose activities for speeding up the expansion of bioenergy in Europe, in order to

  • put an end to Europe’s dependence on oil
  • reduce greenhouse gas emissions and
  • stimulate development in Europe’s rural areas.

The Biomass Action Plan pursues in particular the following two objectives:

  • to at least double biomass energy production in Europe in the next few years and
  • to lay the foundations for a further increase of biomass energy production from 2020.

The Biomass Action Plan has met with a very positive response, since bioenergy can make important contributions to the security of energy supply and the reduction of import dependence, to climate protection and to increasing value-added and employment in rural areas.
