One of the German Government's central political objectives is to achieve a sustainable energy supply. The aim is to secure energy supply for future generations while taking account of ecological goals and simultaneous economic growth. A key element of this strategy is to significantly increase the share of energy supply accounted for by renewable energy sources in the interests of conserving finite energy resources and with a view to environmental and climate protection. The German Government's goal is to double the share of energy from renewable sources in electricity production to 12.5% between 2000 and 2010. This development should then continue beyond 2010.
