The new Renewable Energy Sources Act, which entered into force on 1 January 2009, replaces the previous act of 2004.

This Act serves to implement Directive 2001/77/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 September 2001 on the promotion of the electricity produced from renewable energy sources in the international electricity market (OJ EG No. L 283, page 33).

In terms of achieving expansion targets for renewable energies in the electricity sector, the Renewable Energy Sources Act is the most effective funding instrument at the German government’s disposal. International observers see it as exemplary. The new EEG maintains the basic structure. However, in detail far reaching improvements were introduced, the particular purpose of which is a further increase in the share of renewable energies in electricity generation by 2020 according to the cabinet decision of Meseberg on an integrated energy and climate protection programme. The most prominent changes in the new EEG designed to achieve this target are the more attractive re-powering arrangements, the improved conditions for offshore wind power and an improved grid integration structure for installations generating electricity from renewable energies, including provisions on feed-in management.
